It’s Spring in Davenport Iowa, and with Spring comes the flooding of the Mississippi River. As I understand it, the river floods to some extent every year. Every year businesses are threatened by the rising water. In some years residents have been evacuated. What response do the politicians in the area and business owners have each year? Put up more sandbags! Idiots.

Here’s a thought: build a flood wall. Every year you spend how much money figuring out where to pile the dirt. You would rather throw cash away on the man hours to throw sandbags down than build a wall which would stop it all by itself with just a little time and maintenance during the flood season. But no, we have money to burn (apparently). Every time it happens you go through the same conversation in the papers. What’s so complicated here?

According to the article at USA Today, the place had serious floods in ’93, ’97, ’01, and ’08. Almost like mother nature is giving you a hint. Also according to that article residents and business owners don’t want to build a flood wall because they don’t want to lose their access to the river. Do you people understand that you don’t need a 10 foot wall that’s similar to the one they had in Berlin? Build a smaller one with openings so you can still get to the water, then just bag the openings when needed or put concrete in place with forklifts during that time. It seems like a better idea than creating a huge mess every year.

They’re even building temporary aluminum walls in front of the stadium to protect it from water. So you tear the place up to protect it, but you don’t want to build a nice wall that can still be aesthetically pleasing? Why? Why let the historic buildings downtown get hammered with water and shut down their businesses rather than keeping them high and dry, and still operating?

Dammit, I want to be able to get to Front Street Brewery any day of the week for pretzels, and if it floods I won’t be able to. I won’t stand for it.

I also have a new helmet coming (Friday, probably) that should be a nice addition to my gear, provided that it fits the way it should.

I just deleted a bunch of old posts to clean the place up. I’m in a posting kind of mood again, and I’d like to start on the fresh side. Also, I will probably want to use this as a platform for template modifications on another project I’ve got, so getting rid of less than professional posts is a must.
